Kansas City Chiefs receiver Rashee Rice filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy Wednesday, November 4, listing more than $3.45 million in debts and $677,054 in personal assets, according to USA TODAY’s court-record reporting published Thursday.

The petition was filed in the Northern District of Texas. Much of the debt is connected to civil litigation stemming from Rice’s 2024 Dallas car crash and a separate lawsuit alleging assault.

What Rice listed in the filing

USA TODAY identified more than $3.27 million in unsecured debts arising from civil litigation, business obligations and consumer debt. The assets included a 2023 Mercedes-Benz valued at $53,800 and a Super Bowl LVIII ring valued at $160,000.

KCTV reported that Rice listed 20 creditors, $13,640 across three bank accounts and no home or other real estate. His asset total included more than $420,000 in deferred compensation.

The Associated Press reported that the largest outstanding claim was $979,837 from a crash settlement. Rice is disputing potential debts in other civil cases, including $700,000 sought by crash victims and $200,000 connected to his former girlfriend’s assault allegations. Those allegations remain disputed claims.

What Chapter 7 means for the debts

The U.S. Courts’ Chapter 7 guidance explains that a trustee administers the case and can sell nonexempt property to pay creditors. Some property can be protected by exemptions, and the availability of a discharge depends on the case and the types of debt involved.

Filing a petition does not by itself erase the amounts listed. The bankruptcy court must determine the treatment of the claims and any eventual discharge. The figures reported Thursday describe Rice’s declared financial position at filing.

The crash and his NFL career

Rice pleaded guilty to two third-degree felony charges in July 2025 over the Dallas crash and received five years of probation and a 30-day jail sentence, NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth reported. He served a six-game NFL suspension at the start of the 2025 season.

The 26-year-old is in the final year of his rookie contract. Through five appearances this season, he has 20 catches for 243 yards and two touchdowns, according to NBC 5.
