Dylan Larkin tied the game with 1:17 left in regulation and Lucas Raymond scored the shootout winner as the Detroit Red Wings defeated the Edmonton Oilers 4-3 at Rogers Place on Monday, October 26.

Detroit erased three one-goal deficits. Larkin’s 6-on-5 equalizer answered Colton Dach’s goal with 3:28 remaining, and Michal Postava stopped all three Edmonton attempts in the shootout to win his first NHL start. Postava made 25 saves in his second NHL appearance; Tristan Jarry stopped 26 shots for the Oilers.

The Red Wings improved to 5-4-3. Edmonton moved to 8-2-2 after getting regulation goals from Vasily Podkolzin, Isaac Howard and Dach. Raymond had two assists before the shootout, and Viktor Arvidsson finished with a goal and an assist for Detroit.

Three Edmonton leads, three Detroit replies

Podkolzin opened the scoring at 6:10 of the first period, with Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid assisting. Edmonton stayed ahead until Arvidsson converted on the power play at 8:35 of the second, assisted by Raymond and Alex DeBrincat. Detroit outshot the Oilers 17-7 in that middle period, the Red Wings’ largest shot advantage of the night.

Howard put Edmonton back in front on the power play at 4:18 of the third period, finishing a sequence involving Kasperi Kapanen and Dach. That lead lasted only 30 seconds. Finnie tied it at 4:48, with Arvidsson receiving the lone assist.

Dach’s goal at 16:32 gave Edmonton a 3-2 lead. Ryan Shea and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins assisted, putting the Oilers 3:28 from a regulation win. Detroit removed Postava for an extra attacker at 16:59 and equalized at 18:43. Larkin took Raymond’s pass off his skate, moved it to his stick and beat Jarry between the pads, according to the NHL’s game report. Moritz Seider also received an assist.

Postava kept the game tied with a save on Evan Bouchard’s wrist shot from the slot with nine seconds left in overtime. In the shootout, he stopped McDavid, Draisaitl and Nugent-Hopkins. Raymond converted Detroit’s first attempt, and Jarry saved DeBrincat’s shot before Postava closed out the win.

Zach Hyman left the game at 7:36 of the second period after a hit by Detroit defenseman Andreas Englund brought Hyman’s head into contact with the glass, according to the NHL report. The report did not provide an injury diagnosis.

Edmonton had placed Devon Levi on injured reserve on Friday while preparing for Saturday’s game against Toronto. Matt Tomkins dressed as Jarry’s unused backup against Detroit.

Postava celebrates his first start; Oilers point to puck management

Postava had played in relief against Vancouver on October 22, making Monday his first NHL start rather than his debut. He described the first-start victory as a childhood ambition realized. “I feel like a kid,” he said in Detroit’s official postgame interviews. His approach in the shootout was to enjoy the game, help his teammates and make saves.

Arvidsson credited the support Detroit gave one another across the ice, saying “we played as a five-man unit.” He described moving pucks to the team’s playmakers and creating chances around the net. Coach Todd McLellan emphasized the responses after each Edmonton lead: “you can’t let them get the next one.” McLellan also praised Postava’s anticipation, positioning and rebound control.

The coach identified Michael Brandsegg-Nygård’s physical role alongside Larkin and Raymond as part of Detroit’s effort to slow Edmonton.

Howard credited Edmonton’s second power-play group after finishing Kapanen’s pass. “I think it was just good, good puck movement, from our unit,” he said in his Oilers postgame interview. He said everyone was involved and called the goal a contribution to build on after returning to the lineup.

Shea said Edmonton needed more patience, pointing to poor changes and positioning while saying “we give up too much in the second.” In his postgame interview, he also said Detroit moved the puck up the ice quickly and the Oilers needed to reach their neutral-zone coverage sooner.

Five-on-five combinations and the late extra attacker

Edmonton outscored Detroit 2-1 during 45:30 of five-on-five play. The Red Wings held a 21-17 edge in shots on goal over that span. Detroit’s other two regulation goals came on Arvidsson’s power play and Larkin’s late six-on-five finish. The shootout is separate from each of those totals.

Leon Draisaitl, Connor McDavid and Vasily Podkolzin shared 13:06 at five-on-five, with a 6-3 shot advantage and the opening goal. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Kasperi Kapanen and Colton Dach were together for 6:46, finishing even in shots at 4-4 and ahead 1-0 in goals. Detroit’s most-used trio of Andrew Copp, J.T. Compher and Michael Rasmussen had a 6-1 shot advantage in 10:37 without a goal at either end.

Dach’s late goal came with Kapanen and Nugent-Hopkins up front and Ryan Shea and Evan Bouchard on defense. Shea and Bouchard shared just 1:46 at five-on-five. That scoring shift therefore belongs separately from Shea’s main pairing with Connor Murphy, which logged 16:13 and faced an 11-5 disadvantage in shots. Bouchard and Shakir Mukhamadullin were Edmonton’s busiest pair at 16:52, with a 7-4 shot edge.

Justin Faulk and William Wallinder had an 11-3 shot advantage over 13:40 for Detroit, with no five-on-five goal at either end. Larkin’s tying goal is excluded from these unit results: Detroit removed Postava for an extra attacker at 16:59 of the third period; he returned after the equalizer at 18:43.
