Paolo Banchero’s Fantasy Injury Plan: Use IR or Hold on the Bench

For ESPN season-long points leagues, keep the Magic forward while checking injured-slot eligibility and the cost of a temporary replacement.

Keep Paolo Banchero in a normal 10–12-team season-long redraft league. If your ESPN team has an open injured reserve slot and his player card permits the move, use it. Otherwise, hold him on the bench while assessing a temporary replacement.

This recommendation assumes an ESPN head-to-head points league with daily lineup changes and a bench. Your league controls its roster limits, acquisition budget and lock times. Weekly lineup leagues need to make the same availability decision before their own deadline.

What Is Confirmed

The Magic confirmed a low-grade right high ankle sprain; they have not announced a return date. The NBA’s October 25 injury report listed Banchero out against New York. TSP’s Banchero injury report provides the earlier news context.

A reported recovery estimate is not clearance for a particular game. His 41-minute season opener illustrates the workload you are preserving by holding him, but it cannot tell you how many minutes he will receive when he returns. The advice here concerns his roster spot, without projecting a return date or a replacement’s production.

Use IR Only When Your League Permits It

ESPN’s official roster instructions allow players tagged IR, IL or O to move into an eligible injured slot. ESPN notes that IL and DTD labels apply to fantasy baseball. For basketball, check Banchero’s actual designation and the available IR option on your team page.

Your league must include an IR slot, and it must have room. If the move is unavailable, leave him on the bench rather than dropping him to force an immediate pickup. If another injured player already occupies the slot, compare the two players’ value and confirmed availability before swapping them.

Make the Replacement Earn the Transaction

With an eligible IR move completed, use the open active roster space for a player who can improve your next lineup. Check position eligibility, scheduled games, current availability and a credible rotation role. Reserve enough acquisition budget or weekly adds for another injury. A familiar name alone does not justify the claim.

If you have no injured slot, compare the replacement with your lowest-value healthy reserve. The practical choice may be to cut that reserve and retain Banchero. Do not weaken a useful bench position for a short-term player who will rarely enter your lineup. These are roster-value judgments, not guaranteed scoring gains.

Avoid assigning Banchero’s entire workload to one Orlando teammate. A replacement needs evidence of minutes and involvement in the current rotation. For this points-league decision, favor a usable role over a speculative surge, and do not assume the same addition would suit a category-scoring team.

The Next Manual Check

Checked at 12:56 a.m. ET on Monday, October 26. Recheck the Magic’s medical updates and Banchero’s ESPN designation at 5 p.m. ET Monday, or earlier if your league locks sooner. Before activating him later, confirm both playing clearance and an available active roster space. ESPN requires room to bring a player back from IR.
