Jessica Pegula Hot-Mic Comments About Mirra Andreeva Prompt WTA Apology
The tour acknowledged that players were not told practice microphones were active. Pegula’s representative says she contacted those involved to apologize.

The WTA apologized Thursday after Jessica Pegula’s comments about Mirra Andreeva were broadcast during a practice livestream at Indian Wells, saying players and their teams had not been told courtside microphones were active.
Pegula was speaking with coach Mark Knowles after a practice session Wednesday, November 4, when she called Andreeva “a diva” and said she “needs to be humbled.” The conversation aired on the tour’s YouTube channel before clips circulated on social media.
WTA acknowledges recording failure
“We sincerely apologize for failing to meet our responsibility to ensure players and coaches were properly informed,” the tour said in a statement provided to Front Office Sports. A tour source told the outlet the microphones were intended to capture ambient practice noise.
A representative for Pegula told The Athletic she had not known the conversation was being livestreamed and had expected the discussion to remain private. The representative said Pegula had contacted those involved to apologize.
Pegula’s criticism concerned Andreeva’s conduct during practice and the approach of her coach, Conchita Martinez. Pegula said she believed Martinez encouraged the behavior. She also praised Andreeva’s ability, suggesting the Russian could surpass Coco Gauff if she adopted Gauff’s mentality.
Practice streams continue without audio
The WTA removed recordings of Wednesday’s practice sessions from YouTube. Front Office Sports reported that practice livestreams would continue without audio. Thursday’s subsequent stream featuring Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova was silent, Yahoo Sports reported.
The episode follows earlier player concerns about cameras away from matches. Gauff questioned tournament filming after footage of her breaking a racket at the Australian Open was broadcast in January, despite her belief she was in a private area. Pegula supported Gauff’s objections, according to Front Office Sports.
The WTA Finals begin Sunday, November 8, and run through November 15. Pegula and Gauff are in the same group and are scheduled to meet on the opening day. Pegula and Andreeva are in opposite groups and could meet only in the knockout stage.
