Jacob Misiorowski pitched 5⅔ scoreless innings and Cooper Pratt drove in two runs as the Milwaukee Brewers won their first World Series title with a 4–1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday at Tropicana Field. Trevor Megill recorded the final six outs, stranding Chandler Simpson at second in the ninth when Richie Palacios grounded to Brice Turang, who threw to Jake Bauers for the last out.

The Brewers won the best-of-seven series 4–1. They scored in the second, fifth and sixth innings of Game 5 while Misiorowski and three relievers held Tampa Bay to four hits. Pratt’s second-inning RBI single opened the scoring, and his sixth-inning sacrifice fly brought in Milwaukee’s fourth run.

Misiorowski allowed two hits and one walk, struck out two and hit one batter during his 86-pitch start. He was credited with the victory, while Tampa Bay starter Drew Rasmussen took the loss. Megill allowed the Rays’ only run in the ninth before finishing the championship clincher.

Milwaukee had lost its only previous World Series to St. Louis in seven games in 1982.

The sixth-inning sacrifice fly was hit against Tyler Wells, but the scoring runner, William Contreras, remained Garrett Cleavinger’s responsibility. Team LOB is the official inning-line total. It is not calculated by adding individual hitters’ LOB entries.

Megill Finishes After Tampa Bay’s Ninth-Inning Run

Megill struck out Junior Caminero to begin the ninth, but Liam Hicks doubled to right to give Tampa Bay its third hit. Megill struck out Jonny DeLuca for the second out before Simpson doubled to right, scoring Hicks and cutting the deficit to three. After a mound visit, Palacios grounded to Turang for the final out. Megill finished with one run allowed on two hits, three strikeouts and no walks over two innings. He threw 29 pitches.

Pratt Delivers the First Run

Brice Turang doubled to center with one out in the second inning, and Drew Rasmussen hit Sal Frelick with a pitch. Pratt followed with a line-drive single to center that scored Turang. Tampa Bay limited the damage by retiring Pratt at second on the throw, with Frelick advancing to third. Rasmussen then struck out Garrett Mitchell to finish the inning.

That left Milwaukee ahead by one while Misiorowski worked through Tampa Bay’s order. Junior Caminero singled with two outs in the first, but Liam Hicks lined out to Turang. Misiorowski did not allow another hit until the fourth, when Chandler Simpson singled to right and Frelick’s fielding error allowed Simpson to reach second.

Hicks, who had been hit by a pitch earlier in the fourth, reached third on that play. Misiorowski kept the Rays scoreless when Ben Williamson grounded to David Hamilton at third, and Hamilton threw to Jake Bauers for the final out. Tampa Bay had placed two runners in scoring position without producing a run.

Milwaukee Adds Runs Against the Bullpen

Rasmussen left after four innings with one run allowed on two hits. He struck out four, did not walk a batter and threw 48 pitches. Kevin Kelly took over for the fifth and retired Frelick before the bottom of Milwaukee’s order put together three consecutive singles.

Pratt singled to left, Mitchell’s single sent him to third, and Hamilton drove him in with a sharp ground ball through the right side. Kelly struck out Jackson Chourio for the second out, and Garrett Cleavinger struck out Bauers to finish the inning with Milwaukee ahead 2–0.

The Brewers added two more in the sixth. Cleavinger hit Christian Yelich, and William Contreras doubled to left to score him. Turang’s single moved Contreras to third. Tyler Wells entered with Contreras at third and Turang at first. He struck out Frelick before Pratt hit a sacrifice fly to right in foul territory, bringing Contreras home for a 4–0 lead.

Wells subsequently walked Mitchell, and Steven Matz entered to retire Hamilton on a fly to left. Both sixth-inning runs were charged to Cleavinger, including the inherited runner who scored against Wells. Milwaukee had built its advantage without a home run, using two doubles, singles, hit batters and Pratt’s sacrifice fly to produce its four runs.

Misiorowski Hands Off a Scoreless Start

Misiorowski retired Jonathan Aranda and Caminero to open the sixth, then began Hicks’s plate appearance with a cutter that Hicks fouled off. JoJo Romero took over with an 0–1 count and got Hicks to ground out on his first pitch. Romero returned to strike out Jonny DeLuca to begin the seventh. Simpson reached second on a throwing error by Contreras, giving Tampa Bay another runner in scoring position.

Abner Uribe entered with Simpson at second and one out. Richie Palacios grounded to Bauers, who threw to Uribe covering first as Simpson moved to third. Uribe then got Victor Mesa Jr. to ground to Turang, preserving the four-run lead. Megill followed with a scoreless eighth inning.

Through eight innings, the Brewers’ pitchers had allowed two hits and struck out four. Tampa Bay had not converted either of Milwaukee’s two errors into a run before its ninth-inning rally.

Brewers Reflect on the Championship

“You know, it’s amazing, just watching my guys celebrate. In the city, I know they’re going crazy in Milwaukee. It’s awesome,” Jacob Misiorowski said on FOX as the celebration began, according to MLB.com’s championship report.

Cooper Pratt called it “one of the greatest moments of my life” in his championship interview. He described the postseason’s pressure and difficulty, acknowledged his mistakes and credited teammates with picking him up.

“It’s the best feeling ever,” Christian Yelich said in his interview after the clincher. He said Milwaukee had waited a long time and that he looked forward to bringing the championship home and celebrating with its fans.

IP uses outs: 5.2 means five innings and two outs, not 5.2 decimal innings. IR means inherited runners. Runs and earned runs follow the responsible pitcher, not necessarily the pitcher on the mound when a run scores. Pitch counts reconcile physical pitch events, including the sixth-inning mid-plate-appearance handoff: Misiorowski threw the first pitch to Hicks before Romero entered. Misiorowski’s total is 86 pitches and Romero’s is 10. Jacob Misiorowski was the winning pitcher and Drew Rasmussen the losing pitcher. No save was awarded.
