Major League Baseball’s offseason began Thursday with eligible players becoming free agents and their former clubs entering an exclusive negotiating period. Players can sign with new teams when that window ends November 2 at 5 p.m. Eastern Time.

The calendar follows Milwaukee’s World Series-clinching victory Wednesday. The end of the series sets several immediate deadlines, even though the broader market has not yet opened for outside signings.

Royals Review’s offseason guide identifies October 29 as the date eligible players with six years of major league service become free agents. That status differs from unrestricted permission to negotiate and sign with any club immediately.

During the initial window, a player’s most recent team retains the opportunity to negotiate a return. The distinction explains why the first day of free agency need not produce a wave of agreements with new employers.

November 2 also brings qualifying-offer and most contract-option decisions. Individual contracts can specify different option dates, so a general calendar should not replace the terms attached to a particular player’s deal.

A qualifying offer is a separate mechanism from ordinary free agency. A club’s decision to make one can affect draft compensation if the player subsequently signs elsewhere; receiving an offer does not itself establish a completed contract.

Trading also resumes as the offseason begins. A trade report and a free-agent signing report therefore describe different routes for changing a roster during the same period.

The current collective bargaining agreement expires December 1. The consequences of any work stoppage would depend on events at that point, rather than on treating a possible lockout as already underway Thursday.

For now, the immediate dates are established. Former clubs have their exclusive opportunity, while players entering the open market must wait until the November 2 deadline to sign with a different major league organization.
