Bertola Qualifies for Basel; Brunold Gets Lucky Loser Place

Remy Bertola beat Mika Brunold 7–6(5), 6–4 in Basel’s final round of qualifying on Sunday, but both Swiss players will appear in the ATP 500 main draw after Brunold received a lucky loser place.

Bertola, 28, qualified for the second consecutive year and will face Denis Shapovalov. The updated official draw pairs Brunold, 22, with Portugal’s Nuno Borges. Brunold’s opportunity follows withdrawals from the field.

Both players had entered qualifying on wild cards. Bertola beat Jakub Paul 6–2, 6–1 in Saturday’s opening round, while Brunold defeated third seed Jaime Faria 7–6(4), 7–6(5). Bertola then won Sunday’s first-set tiebreak 7–5 before taking the second set.

Brunold arrived after winning his second Challenger title in Roanne the previous Sunday. He joins Bertola, Stan Wawrinka, Jérôme Kym and Dominic Stricker among five Swiss players in Basel’s main draw.

Main-draw play begins Monday, with the tournament continuing through November 1. Novak Djokovic’s opening match against Ugo Humbert remains part of the field at the indoor hard-court event.
