Angels Sale Reopens the Mike Trout Question

The agreement to sell the Angels creates a rare reset—and forces the franchise to decide whether Mike Trout remains at the centre of its future.

Kroenke Sports & Entertainment’s agreement to acquire a controlling interest in the Angels gives the franchise a rare reset. It also revives the question that has followed Mike Trout through years of losing: should he remain the face of the club, or should the two sides finally consider a trade?

New ownership can make either path credible. Stan Kroenke’s organization could invest around Trout and try to return the Angels to contention. It could also decide that a deeper rebuild—and a chance for Trout to pursue October elsewhere—offers a cleaner beginning.

But a deal is far from simple. Trout is owed $37.1 million annually through 2030 and holds a full no-trade clause, giving him control over any destination. He said in August that he still wanted to remain with the Angels, and interim general manager John Mozeliak said the club was not considering a Trout trade at the deadline.

So this is not a trade report. It is the unavoidable conversation around an incoming owner, an aging superstar and a franchise confronting a different future. The first meaningful decision belongs as much to Trout as it does to the Angels.
