Rune recovered from a set down to win 3–6, 6–3, 7–6 (9–7), adding a quarterfinal appearance to his comeback from Achilles surgery.

Holger Rune reached the Swiss Indoors Basel quarterfinals Wednesday by defeating Hubert Hurkacz 3–6, 6–3, 7–6 (9–7), recovering from a set down before winning a tightly contested deciding tiebreak.

The result gave Rune a second consecutive ATP Tour main-draw victory in Basel, extending a comeback that had already produced an important opening-round milestone against Quentin Halys.

Serve numbers frame the result

The Tennis.com statistical record credits Hurkacz with 18 aces to Rune’s five. The larger ace total did not settle a match in which both players conceded serve only once.

Hurkacz converted his only break-point opportunity. Rune converted one of five, with the remaining pressure resolved through service holds and the final tiebreak rather than a late break of serve.

Rune’s second-serve performance provided a different measure of his effectiveness. He won 24 of the 32 second-serve points counted in the statistical table, compared with eight of 18 for Hurkacz.

Those figures describe where Rune kept points competitive after missing his first serve. They do not, on their own, establish how individual rallies unfolded or identify an unreported tactical change.

Hurkacz took the first set 6–3, but Rune answered by the same margin. A deciding set without a break brought the match to a tiebreak that continued beyond the normal seven-point target.

Another step in Rune’s return

Rune had beaten Halys in another third-set tiebreak Monday for his first Tour main-draw win since Achilles surgery. That earlier match lasted two hours and 40 minutes.

The former world No. 4 entered Basel ranked No. 1202 after his extended absence. Reaching the last eight supplies another concrete competitive result without implying that his previous ranking or level has already been restored.

Wednesday’s finish also kept Rune in the ATP 500 draw after a match that could not be separated by the first two sets. The quarterfinal place belongs to him following the 9–7 deciding tiebreak.
