Djokovic Falls to Struff in Basel as ATP Finals Chase Continues
Jodar’s Thursday defeat prevents him adding more Basel points, while Djokovic still needs results to close the gap in the ATP Finals race.

Novak Djokovic’s route to the 2026 ATP Finals became harder after his defeat by Jan-Lennard Struff in Basel. Djokovic has not qualified and can no longer add points at the Swiss Indoors this week.
BBC Sport reported Friday that Djokovic stood 11th in the qualification race, 319 points behind Rafael Jodar. The standings snapshot below records the ATP’s October 29 figures; later results can change the gaps.
The ATP’s October 29 qualification report also notes Frances Tiafoe’s opening-round defeat in Vienna. Alex de Minaur remains active in that tournament’s quarterfinals, so the outcome of the race still depends on more than Djokovic’s own results.
The official ATP Finals leaderboard, checked on October 29, lists Djokovic 11th with 2,890 points. Rafael Jodar is ninth on 3,209, a 319-point advantage, while Alex de Minaur stands between them in 10th with 2,980. These are the ATP’s published October 29 figures, before later match results are incorporated, so the gaps can change as rounds finish.
Why ninth place matters this year
The Finals has an eight-player singles field, but second-placed Jannik Sinner has ended his season because of injury. The ATP’s October 26 qualification report therefore identifies ninth-placed Jodar as the player holding the final available qualifying position. Ninth in the displayed Race currently represents eighth among the players still available for Turin.
This distinction explains why simply comparing Djokovic with the eighth name in the table produces the wrong immediate target. It also separates the qualification race from the usual ATP Rankings and from his No. 4 seeding in Basel. A tournament seed does not establish where a player stands in the season’s qualification contest.
| Race position | Player | Points |
|---|---|---|
| 8 | Frances Tiafoe | 3,380 |
| 9 | Rafael Jodar | 3,209 |
| 10 | Alex de Minaur | 2,980 |
| 11 | Novak Djokovic | 2,890 |
| 12 | Taylor Fritz | 2,735 |
What the Basel defeat changes
Djokovic beat Ugo Humbert 4–6, 6–3, 6–4 in two hours and 29 minutes on Wednesday. His official match report confirms the same 11th-place position and 319-point deficit shown by the Finals leaderboard. He then lost to Jan-Lennard Struff in a deciding-set tiebreak on Thursday, ending his eight-match winning streak in their head-to-head meetings.
Basel is an ATP 500 event, with 500 points available to the champion. His defeat ends that opportunity this week, and his qualification position must now be assessed alongside his competitors’ results. Jodar’s Basel run has ended, and his rivals’ results in Vienna can also change the relevant points gap.
For readers following the chase, the practical question after each round is whether Djokovic has reduced the gap to the last available place. A victory is useful, but it does not automatically amount to a qualification milestone if a rival also advances. Points already included in a live total should not be added a second time when calculating a potential finishing position.
The remaining route to Turin
The ATP’s 2026 calendar places the Paris Masters in the week beginning November 2, after Basel and Vienna. The Finals then runs November 15–22 at Inalpi Arena in Turin. The calendar shows where further points can be earned; it does not, by itself, confirm Djokovic’s participation in every remaining event.
Djokovic’s route remains open despite his Basel exit, with further points available at subsequent events if he competes. The qualification picture must be reassessed as Djokovic, de Minaur and other active contenders complete their next rounds. Until the ATP confirms qualification, the accurate description is that he is pursuing a place, rather than that a particular round has guaranteed one.
