Nuno Borges Beats Casper Ruud to Reach Basel Last Eight
Borges recovered from a 1–6 opening set to win 1–6, 6–3, 6–4 against the ninth seed at the Swiss Indoors.

Nuno Borges advanced to the Swiss Indoors Basel quarterfinals Wednesday by defeating ninth-seeded Casper Ruud 1–6, 6–3, 6–4, overturning a difficult opening set with a more resilient finish.
The Portuguese player won the final two sets without needing a tiebreak. Ruud’s strong beginning therefore produced an early advantage that did not determine the match’s final outcome.
Borges answers the opening set
The official tournament report confirmed Borges as one of Wednesday’s first quarterfinalists. Holger Rune later joined him after a separate three-set victory over Hubert Hurkacz.
Ruud led the ace count 12–4, according to the Tennis.com match statistics. Borges nevertheless landed a higher percentage of first serves, 78 percent compared with 69 percent for the Norwegian.
The distinction is useful when assessing the comeback. An ace is a point won directly, but the final result also depends on the service points that continue into a rally and the opportunities created on return.
Borges converted two of four break points and saved five of the seven he faced. Ruud also broke twice, but his breaks were concentrated in the opening set while Borges found the separation required in each of the next two.
Later-set serving changes the balance
Sofascore’s match account describes improved first-serve accuracy for Borges after the opener. It also records that he faced no break points in the deciding set, allowing his own return breakthrough to carry greater weight.
That progression explains why the 6–1 opening set can make the overall contest look more one-sided than the result. Games won in the first set do not carry into the next, and Borges reset the match by taking the second.
The final set then required a further step rather than a continuation of the earlier score. Borges protected his service games and completed the 6–4 finish to secure his place in the last eight.
The result ends Ruud’s Basel run in the second round and keeps Borges in contention at the indoor hard-court ATP 500 event.
