Who Gets a World Series Ring? Players, Coaches and Midseason Trades Explained

Teams decide whom to recognize with championship rings. Traded players, injured teammates and staff can be included, under different rules from playoff cash.

World Series rings are awarded by the championship organization, with team ownership deciding how widely to distribute them. Players and coaches are the central recipients, but a ring can also go to an injured player, someone traded during the season or a member of the staff who never appeared on a postseason roster.

That is why the Brewers’ first World Series championship raises a different question from who played in the clincher. The group recognized by Milwaukee can extend beyond the players who beat Tampa Bay in Game 5 on October 28.

Who decides who gets a ring?

The club makes the recipient decisions. ABC7’s account of the tradition describes ownership’s role and the range of people teams may recognize, including former players, injured players, front-office employees and support staff.

A place on the final World Series roster is therefore not a complete list of possible ring recipients. Conversely, a player having appeared for the club does not make a report about an expected award the same thing as an announced presentation.

An appearance total alone cannot confirm an award. A short stint can be recognized, as a documented presentation shows, while an individual club announcement establishes what has been decided for its own recipients.

Can a player traded away get one?

Yes. A documented example is Miguel Vargas, who received a 2024 Dodgers championship ring while playing for the White Sox in 2025. MLB.com reported the presentation at Dodger Stadium on July 1, 2025. Vargas had played 30 games for Los Angeles in 2024 before being traded to Chicago that July.

His case separates the championship season from the presentation date. He did not need to be a Dodger when the jewelry was handed over. The ring recognized his time with the team during the season for which the award was made.

The same distinction matters when a player has been released, moved to the minors or missed the postseason through injury. Those circumstances do not automatically answer what a club will decide to give that person.

The Brewers’ McCullers question

Lance McCullers Jr. supplies a current Milwaukee example. The Houston Chronicle reported that he made two appearances during a brief stint with the Brewers in July and is likely to receive another World Series ring after their title.

The report describes an expected award, not a confirmed Brewers recipient announcement. A short stint can be recognized, but the club’s decision still controls the outcome. McCullers’ case should not be presented as a rule requiring Milwaukee to award every former player identical jewelry.

Do coaches and employees receive the same ring?

Coaches are normally included in the championship group, while clubs may extend the recognition to employees across the organization. Teams can also commission different versions of a ring for different recipient groups. A staff member’s commemorative award need not have the same design or value as a player’s.

That is another reason to be precise about a club’s announcement. A total that combines different award types is not necessarily a count of identical player rings, and a list of recipients is separate from the details of the jewelry itself.

A ring is not a playoff share

A championship ring and postseason cash are separate benefits. The players’ pool is governed by Article X of MLB’s collective bargaining agreement. Its allocation to the World Series champion is 36%, while the runner-up receives 24%; the club’s individual awards then depend on the agreement and players’ distribution process.

Receiving a ring does not establish the amount of a cash award, and a cash-share calculation does not determine a ring’s value. The two questions require different records. See how MLB playoff shares work for the money calculation.
