Thunder Depth Chart After Williams and Wallace Injuries: Who Gets the Minutes?
Jared McCain and Ajay Mitchell received the first larger roles, but Oklahoma City’s injury list makes the replacement plan more complicated than one starting-five change.

Oklahoma City’s first response to losing Jalen Williams and Cason Wallace was to give Jared McCain and Ajay Mitchell more responsibility. Its developing depth chart requires a broader explanation, however, because the Thunder are replacing two unavailable starters while also working around injuries elsewhere in the rotation. Monday’s victory over Phoenix provides an initial record of who played. It does not settle which combinations will remain when the other injured players return.
Williams needs surgery for a fractured left fibula and dislocated left ankle, while Wallace needs surgery for a torn labrum in his left shoulder. As explained in TSP’s report on the confirmed diagnoses, neither player has an announced return timetable. Those are the established medical findings; an outside estimate about recovery should not be presented as the team’s schedule.
The immediate availability picture changed again before Wednesday’s Dallas game. Alex Caruso and Chet Holmgren were ruled out, according to The Oklahoman’s injury report. Mitchell, initially questionable with a right ankle sprain, was subsequently reported available by RotoWire, citing USA Today’s Clemente Almanza. His clearance removes one immediate uncertainty without resolving the longer rotation problem.
Where the minutes went against Phoenix
Monday was Oklahoma City’s first completed game following the Williams and Wallace injuries. The Thunder won 125–114, as recorded by the official game page. The following figures are observed minutes and production from that game, not projections for the rest of the season.
| Player | Minutes | Points | Other recorded production |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jared McCain | 30 | 18 | 4 assists; 4 three-pointers |
| Ajay Mitchell | 25 | 30 | 5 assists |
| Kenrich Williams | 24 | 3 | 7 rebounds |
| Aday Mara | 20 | 11 | 10 rebounds; 2 blocks |
| Josh Dix | 22 | 0 | 1 rebound |
That distribution shows why a replacement list needs to cover more than the two new backcourt opportunities. Kenrich Williams and Mara also received substantial work, while Caruso’s departure during the game changed the available options again. The minutes were produced by that particular combination of absences. They cannot all be attributed to the losses of Jalen Williams and Wallace alone.
McCain has an opportunity to establish a larger role
McCain’s playing time is a more useful starting point than his scoring total when assessing the change. A larger share of the rotation gives a player opportunities on possessions when the first shot is not his, including the work of maintaining spacing and moving the ball against a recovering defense. Those responsibilities remain relevant on nights when the jump shot is less effective.
His performance against Phoenix showed that the expanded assignment could include meaningful offensive production. It did not establish that the same shooting result will recur. The distinction matters when judging the depth chart: a sustained place in the rotation can survive a poor shooting game, while a scoring burst by itself does not prove that a player will finish every close contest.
The next evidence to track is whether McCain continues receiving comparable stretches when the game is competitive and which teammates share those minutes. Starting is one sign of responsibility. Closing a tight game or handling possessions while a primary creator rests would provide different information about how the coaching staff intends to use him.
Mitchell’s clearance matters beyond the starting lineup
Mitchell offers Oklahoma City another option for initiating possessions, which is particularly important when an injury removes a player rather than simply changing the order of a healthy rotation. The remaining guards must divide the work of bringing the ball into the offense and creating an advantage after the first action is defended. Giving everyone extra minutes does not automatically distribute that work evenly.
His availability against Dallas therefore matters even before considering another large scoring performance. It allows the Thunder to retain one of the players who had already taken on a larger assignment. It also makes it possible to evaluate that role without simultaneously measuring what happens when the replacement guard is missing as well.
That does not make Mitchell a complete substitute for either injured starter. The relevant comparison is the work he is being asked to perform in the current group. Oklahoma City can divide an absent player’s responsibilities across multiple lineups instead of assigning every offensive and defensive task to one replacement.
The bench and frontcourt remain part of the answer
Bennett Stirtz also received an extended run against Phoenix, with Heavy’s rotation review recording 25 minutes, seven points and one assist against two turnovers. His role should be examined separately from McCain’s. An additional guard used to organize a bench possession addresses a different need from a player receiving a shooting opportunity alongside the established starters.
The same distinction applies to the big men. Kenrich Williams entered the starting group while Holmgren was unavailable, rather than simply inheriting Jalen Williams’ role. A frontcourt adjustment made under those conditions cannot automatically be treated as permanent. Mara’s rebounding and rim protection were useful against Phoenix, but his available combinations change with the injury list.
Dix’s appearance is another reason to examine role before points. His scoreless outing still involved a meaningful stretch on the floor. Whether that opportunity repeats, and what the team needs from him during it, will tell more about his place than assuming that one box score either secured or eliminated a rotation spot.
Oklahoma City’s current replacement plan is consequently a set of observed opportunities with different causes. McCain and Mitchell provide the clearest first evidence in the backcourt. The bench assignments and frontcourt minutes need another layer of scrutiny because other injuries helped create them. The next completed games will show which decisions persist rather than merely filling the gaps on one night.
