The PGA Tour is nearing a sponsorship agreement with Visa that would connect the payments company to its redesigned Tour Championship and three Challenger Series events, according to Sports Business Journal reporting published October 29.

Golf Monthly, citing SBJ’s Josh Carpenter, reported that Visa would become an official Tour marketing partner in 2027 before the tournament sponsorship begins in 2028. The possible annual commitment was described as being in the high eight figures. Neither party commented on the proposed arrangement.

The report describes Visa as one of several sponsors for the new Tour Championship, rather than identifying it as the competition’s sole title sponsor. Final financial terms, contract duration and an announcement date have not been confirmed.

The sponsorship discussions come alongside a competitive overhaul the Tour’s boards approved in June. Beginning in 2028, the organization will operate concurrent Championship and Challenger series, with the latter providing a formal route into the top tier. The structure includes promotion and relegation instead of treating the two schedules as interchangeable.

The June framework calls for Championship fields averaging 120 players and Challenger fields of up to 144. Regular-season tournaments in both series are planned as 72-hole competitions with a halfway cut. Championship purses are set at a minimum of $20 million per regular-season event, while Challenger events carry at least $4 million.

Those separate competitions explain why the reported Visa package includes rights at more than one level. The Tour’s approved plan also introduces match play into the postseason and allows its season-ending showcase to rotate among courses.

The approved structure also addresses player access. At least 90 players will retain Championship Series status, with 20 advancing from the Challenger Series each season. Two Challenger victories bring immediate promotion. The June framework states that the Championship Series will have no sponsor exemptions.
