CAMDEN, N.J. — LeBron James arrived at his first Philadelphia 76ers media day on Monday with championship expectations, while acknowledging that the team’s new collection of stars will need time to become a cohesive unit.
James, who joined Philadelphia in free agency, said his decision was influenced by conversations with Tyrese Maxey. He described the guard as one of the main factors in choosing the Sixers after considering several destinations.
The 41-year-old also made clear that a modest playoff run would not satisfy him. “I didn’t leave my family to lose in the second round,” James said, according to Yahoo Sports’ account of the news conference.
Philadelphia’s offseason brought James together with Joel Embiid, Maxey, Jaylen Brown and VJ Edgecombe. Brown arrived in a trade with Boston, giving the Sixers another established scorer alongside a group that already includes the franchise’s longtime centre and its lead guard.
The additions create immediate questions about how touches, ballhandling and defensive assignments will be distributed. Monday’s appearances introduced the new group publicly; training camp will provide the first sustained opportunity to work through those responsibilities on the floor.
James said he would fill whatever role the team required. His comments emphasized flexibility rather than a fixed job description, with the veteran pointing to the range of tasks he can perform.
He also stressed the need for daily work, saying the players, coaches and organization appeared aligned in their intentions. He cautioned that building a successful team takes time, even when the individual talent is already present.
Asked whether this would be the final contract of his career, James declined to look that far ahead, saying his attention remained on the present.
For Philadelphia, the immediate task is to turn an eventful summer into a workable rotation. Embiid’s interior scoring, Maxey’s pace and the arrival of two experienced wings give the team several ways to attack, but those options still have to function together.
The Sixers are scheduled to open the regular season at the defending champion New York Knicks on Oct. 20. Before then, camp and preseason games will begin to show how their new roster fits.
