Jalen Brunson says he has been fully cleared following surgery on his left wrist, allowing the Knicks guard to return for training camp as New York prepares to defend its NBA championship.
Brunson announced the update Thursday at the Roommates Show Block Party on Randall’s Island, where he and teammate Josh Hart hosted a live edition of their podcast. The Knicks hold media day Monday and begin camp Tuesday in Tarrytown.
“And I just wanted to tell you guys that I am fully cleared,” Brunson told the crowd, according to Yahoo Sports’ account of the event.
The procedure took place in July after Brunson played through wrist discomfort during New York’s championship run. He said during a summer radio interview that he began noticing the problem late in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals against Cleveland.
The injury affected his shooting wrist, and he spent much of the offseason wearing a cast. Stefan Bondy of the New York Post reported that the operation addressed a tendon problem and that Brunson reiterated his clearance when asked about playing five-on-five.
Brunson averaged 28.4 points, 6.1 assists and 3.2 rebounds during the playoffs, shooting 46.5% from the field and 36.3% from three-point range. He earned the MVP awards for both the Eastern Conference finals and the NBA Finals as the Knicks won their first championship since 1973.
He scored 45 points in the title-clinching fifth game in San Antonio. Thursday’s event included fellow Knicks Jose Alvarado and Landry Shamet, who also discussed their decisions to re-sign with New York during the offseason.
Alvarado agreed to a three-year, $14 million contract, while Shamet signed for four years and $24 million, the Post reported. Their deals keep two members of New York’s championship roster with the team entering camp.
New York also enters camp with Karl-Anthony Towns’ extension talks unresolved. ESPN reported this week that negotiations had stalled, though Towns remains under contract and the sides could still reach an agreement during the season.
