Ernie Johnson Names Final Season Hosting Inside the NBA
Johnson will step away from the studio show after 37 seasons while continuing other broadcasting work, including NCAA tournament coverage.

Ernie Johnson says the 2026–27 season will be his last as host of Inside the NBA, ending a 37-season run at the desk of the basketball studio show.
Johnson announced the decision in a video Wednesday. He said the choice was his and emphasized that he was reducing his workload rather than retiring from television altogether.
The broadcasting work Johnson will continue
He plans to continue working on NCAA tournament coverage and other TNT and CBS projects. He also described a new production company, 32 Bowties, focused on positive sports storytelling.
The announcement therefore concerns a specific role on a specific program. It does not mean Johnson is immediately leaving every broadcast assignment or that the current season’s remaining shows have been cancelled.
Johnson became Inside the NBA’s full-time host in 1990 after joining Turner the previous year. His work with Kenny Smith, Charles Barkley and Shaquille O’Neal helped establish the program’s familiar studio rhythm.
NBA commissioner Adam Silver issued a statement recognizing Johnson’s contribution to the way supporters experience the league. The NBA said his final season would provide an opportunity to celebrate that work.
How Inside the NBA’s production is arranged
The show now appears on ESPN under an arrangement in which TNT continues producing it. That production relationship is distinct from Johnson’s personal decision about how much broadcasting work to undertake.
For viewers, the immediate consequence is a final season with Johnson in the hosting role. For the production, the longer-term issue is how to maintain the chemistry of a program built around an unusually established group.
The announcement names no successor. A replacement requires a separate decision from the production.
Johnson’s continuing NCAA tournament broadcasting work means this is not a television farewell. The confirmed change concerns his Inside the NBA hosting tenure after this season. Follow TSP’s Business of Sports coverage for further broadcasting and television production news.
