Daron Payne Ruled Out Against Eagles After Significant Foot Injury
Washington downgraded Payne to out after Friday’s practice injury. NFL Network reports an extended absence is likely, with further evaluation pending.

Washington Commanders defensive tackle Daron Payne has been ruled out against the Philadelphia Eagles after suffering a significant foot injury in Friday’s practice, according to reporting from NFL Network and the team’s subsequent availability update.
Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo reported that the injury was likely to send Payne to injured reserve and keep him out for an extended period. Further evaluation is expected. A specific diagnosis and a definitive return date have not been announced, so the report does not establish that his season is over.
Payne initially appeared as questionable on Washington’s Friday game-status report after participating on a limited basis. The later downgrade removes him from Sunday’s lineup. That changes the defensive interior for a division game: fellow tackle Javon Kinlaw had already been ruled out with a knee injury after missing practice throughout the week.
Jer’Zhan Newton remains another availability question. Washington listed him as questionable with a pectoral injury after three limited practices. The club’s report said his potential return could help compensate for Kinlaw’s absence. Charles Omenihu, listed with groin and ankle issues, practiced on a limited basis but did not receive a game designation on that report.
Payne, 29, started Washington’s first six games. The team’s player record credits him with 14 combined tackles, one sack and a forced fumble this season. His career totals stand at 136 appearances, 130 starts and 38 sacks, all with Washington. He recorded a career-best 11.5 sacks in 2022. His official profile lists the Alabama product at 6-foot-3 and 320 pounds.
Washington enters the Philadelphia matchup at 1–4–1, returning from its bye after a 23–17 loss at San Francisco. Payne’s absence adds to the personnel decisions facing the defense as it prepares for Eagles running back Saquon Barkley, whom Washington’s Friday report identified as cleared to play.
