Connor McDavid extended his season-opening point and assist streaks to 14 games as the Edmonton Oilers beat the New York Islanders 4–0 on Saturday at UBS Arena. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored twice, with McDavid setting up his second goal to continue the NHL-record assist run.

Nugent-Hopkins opened the scoring 8:42 into the second period, and Vasily Podkolzin made it 2–0 just 68 seconds later. Nugent-Hopkins added a power-play goal at 18:26. Jason Dickinson completed the scoring into an empty net with 2:37 remaining in the third period.

Tristan Jarry stopped all 18 shots for his second consecutive shutout. Leon Draisaitl recorded two assists, while McDavid increased his league-leading totals to 29 assists and 37 points. Edmonton improved to 10–2–2 and won the opener of a three-game road trip that continues against the Rangers on Sunday.

The Islanders fell to 7–5–2 after winning their previous two games. They managed a season-low 18 shots and went 0-for-4 on the power play. Edmonton converted one of six opportunities. New York accumulated 33 penalty minutes and was shorthanded a season-high six times, according to the team’s game report.

The Oilers stayed unbeaten on the road at 6–0–0. Jarry has stopped 42 consecutive shots across his two shutouts, while the Islanders were held scoreless for the first time this season. Coach Pete DeBoer said his team looked fatigued during its fourth game in seven nights and made costly mistakes. Evan Bouchard also added his 16th assist of the season, tying for the league lead among defensemen in that category.

Edmonton forward Isaac Howard left after an early knee-on-knee collision with Emil Heineman, who received a major penalty and game misconduct. Howard did not return. The Islanders were also without defenseman Ryan Pulock, who was being evaluated after leaving Thursday’s game at Minnesota with an upper-body injury.
