Young Gives Colorado a Ground Game to Build On
Colorado ran 43 times for 222 yards against Kansas State, including runs on all 14 of its fourth-quarter snaps. Young accounted for 24 carries and will start again, Deion Sanders said Tuesday. Sanders moved Leon Bell to right guard and started Larry Johnson III at right tackle to help Colorado run downhill. “We ran the ball, and we imposed our physical will,” Sanders said when asked what the team could carry forward. Isaac Wilson completed 14 of 21 passes for 185 yards without an interception and found tight end Charlie Williams for the 11-yard overtime winner. It was Wilson’s first win as a Colorado starter. “Even in the losses, I’ve stayed hungry,” Wilson said after the game. Colorado’s Kansas State report
A productive run game on early downs would give Wilson more manageable passing situations. Arizona State has held four opponents under 100 rushing yards. BYU entered its game with the Sun Devils averaging 193.7 rushing yards and finished with 47. Arizona State’s BYU notes
Fette and Arizona State’s Pass Protection
Freshman Jake Fette is Arizona State’s expected starter. Coach Kenny Dillingham named him his choice at Monday’s press conference and said, “I think he’s earned it.” Fette went 22 of 42 for 166 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in his first start. He threw both touchdowns in the third quarter, helping Arizona State tie BYU at 17 after trailing 17–3 at halftime. Dillingham’s Nov. 2 press conference · Arizona State’s BYU report
BYU sacked Fette six times before halftime as Arizona State used its seventh offensive-line combination in eight games. Colorado recorded a season-high five sacks against Kansas State and has 22 this season. Linebacker Gideon Lampron had 16 tackles and two sacks in the win. He gives Colorado a way to test Arizona State’s protection before Fette has time to look downfield.
“I need to come out better in the first half,” Fette said after the BYU game. Arizona’s Family
Freshman Cardae Mack ran for 123 yards on 23 carries and caught five passes for 47 yards at BYU. Reed Harris has 804 receiving yards and eight touchdown catches through eight games. Dillingham said BYU often moved its deep safety toward Harris, creating opportunities for other receivers. Mack’s work as a receiver gives Arizona State a shorter throw if Colorado brings pressure.
