Carlos Baleba needs further assessment after injuring his hamstring during Manchester United’s 3–2 Champions League win over Roma on Tuesday, coach Michael Carrick said.

The midfielder pulled up early in the second half at Old Trafford and left the field. Carrick identified the hamstring problem but did not give a recovery timetable in comments reported by ESPN on Wednesday.

Baleba, 22, was making his fifth United start. His debut had been delayed by an ankle injury sustained during preseason with Brighton, before he joined United in a £70 million transfer.

The Cameroon international is expected to remain at Carrington during the international break for further evaluation by United’s medical staff, ESPN reported. Carrick said the initial signs were concerning, while stressing that he did not yet have more information on the injury.

United’s next league opponent is Aston Villa on Sunday. Patrick Dorgu returned to training Monday after a hamstring problem and could be available for that match, but Carrick’s comments did not establish how long Baleba will be sidelined.
