Arizona at Texas Tech: Fifita’s Efficiency Meets a Defense That Scores
No. 22 Arizona takes a five-game winning streak to No. 13 Texas Tech. Both teams are 6–1 and 3–1 in the Big 12 ahead of Saturday’s noon ET kickoff.

Arizona takes its five-game winning streak to Lubbock on Saturday, October 31, for a matchup that will separate two teams carrying the same Big 12 record into November. The No. 22 Wildcats and No. 13 Texas Tech are both 6–1 overall and 3–1 in conference play. Their noon Eastern Time kickoff at Galaxy Stadium gives Arizona a chance to extend its strongest start since 2014 and gives the Red Raiders their first opportunity to respond to last weekend’s loss at Cincinnati.
The central matchup is Arizona’s passing efficiency against a Texas Tech defense that has repeatedly turned interceptions into points. Noah Fifita has completed 74.2% of his passes, while the Red Raiders have scored on interception returns in four consecutive games. Arizona’s ability to keep those possessions productive, without supplying another defensive touchdown, will matter more than the teams’ similar scoring averages.
When and where to watch
Kickoff is scheduled for noon ET on Saturday, October 31, at Galaxy Stadium in Lubbock, Texas. Texas Tech’s official game announcement confirms ESPN’s U.S. broadcast, with Dave Pasch, Dusty Dvoracek and Taylor McGregor. Streaming is also listed through the ESPN App, subject to the viewer’s television or streaming access. Arizona’s radio call is on Wildcats Radio 1290 AM and KHYT 107.5 FM; the Texas Tech Sports Network call is also available through the Varsity app.
A seven-game comparison
These are overall 2026 figures through October 24, covering seven completed games for each team. The schedules differ, so the averages describe what each team has produced rather than predicting Saturday’s score. Arizona has generated more passing yardage and converted a higher share of third downs. Texas Tech has run for more yards per game and collected substantially more interceptions.

Fifita’s decisions against Tech’s defense
Fifita enters with 2,064 passing yards, 18 touchdown passes and four interceptions. Isaiah Mizell leads the team with 493 receiving yards and five touchdown catches. Tré Spivey sustained a season-ending broken foot against Cincinnati on October 3, according to Arizona’s game notes. Mizell followed a 100-yard game against West Virginia with 134 yards in the Wildcats’ 39–3 win over Iowa State.
Brent Brennan emphasized the need to avoid difficult down-and-distance situations in his Monday news conference. “I think this is going to be a huge line of scrimmage game,” he said, according to Arizona Desert Swarm’s account of the remarks. Brennan connected an effective running game with Fifita’s chances to distribute the ball, a useful distinction against a defense that can punish forced throws.
Arizona offensive coordinator Seth Doege returns to the school where he played quarterback. That familiarity supplies a personal connection, but it does not establish a tactical advantage. Brennan said the more useful question was how Arizona prepared during the week, rather than whether Doege knew the stadium.
Hammond, the running game and Dickey’s status
Will Hammond is listed first at quarterback on Texas Tech’s weekly depth chart. His seven-game line is 1,561 passing yards, six touchdown passes and six interceptions. J’Koby Williams leads the running game with 619 yards on 86 carries. Williams, Quinten Joyner and Cameron Dickey appear together with “or” designations at running back, so the chart does not promise one player a fixed share of Saturday’s carries.
Dickey’s potential return is the availability development to distinguish from a confirmed game-day decision. Texas Tech’s weekly notes say he could return after missing the previous two games. KCBD reported Monday that Joey McGuire said Dickey had practiced Sunday and was expected back against Arizona following an ankle injury. That expectation is not the final availability designation.
“We’ve turned this into a five-game season where there’s no room for error,” McGuire said at the Monday news conference, as reported by KCBD. The Red Raiders lost 37–24 at Cincinnati after opening 6–0. They have nevertheless won twelve consecutive home games, and a victory Saturday would match the program’s longest home winning streak.
What remains open before kickoff
The Big 12’s official availability report for Arizona–Texas Tech was still marked “Report Pending” at the October 28 evening review. Neither an empty report nor a weekly depth chart establishes that every player is healthy. The final designations and any later lineup announcements remain the relevant checks before kickoff.
Arizona’s defense arrives after holding Iowa State to 221 total yards and three points, while Tech’s offense will try to make its ground game and passing decisions work together more consistently. The first useful signs Saturday will be whether Arizona stays out of long third downs and whether Texas Tech can sustain drives against Arizona’s defense.
