Game recap

Jonathan Aranda’s third-inning homer supplied the only run as the Tampa Bay Rays beat the New York Yankees 1–0 in ALDS Game 1 on October 3 at Tropicana Field. Drew Rasmussen and Bryan Baker combined on a one-hit shutout, giving Tampa Bay a 1–0 lead in the best-of-five series.

Rasmussen carried a no-hit bid into the eighth before Austin Wells doubled with two outs. Wells was thrown out at third on the relay from Victor Mesa Jr. through Taylor Walls to Junior Caminero, ending the inning. Rasmussen earned the win with eight scoreless innings, 10 strikeouts and two walks on 101 pitches.

Baker struck out pinch-hitter Giancarlo Stanton and Ben Rice in the ninth, then got Cody Bellinger to ground out to Aranda for the final out. Baker retired all three batters he faced on 14 pitches to earn the save.

Gerrit Cole took the loss after allowing Aranda’s homer among five hits over five innings. Cole struck out five, walked one and threw 82 pitches. Ryan Weathers, Paul Blackburn and Brent Headrick held Tampa Bay hitless over the final three innings, but the Yankees could not erase the one-run deficit.
