DeVonta Smith Out Tonight: Week 8 Fantasy Replacements Before Eagles–Commanders
Smith is ruled out with a hamstring injury. Replace him before lineup lock, with afternoon options preferable to an unsupported late gamble.

DeVonta Smith should be removed from Week 8 starting lineups. Philadelphia has ruled him out with a hamstring injury for Sunday night’s visit to Washington. There is no reason to hold the starting spot open in the hope that a questionable designation changes: Smith’s status is already out.
The Eagles’ official Friday report also ruled out receivers Dontayvion Wicks and Britain Covey. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:20 p.m. EST. Those absences create decisions within Philadelphia’s offense, but they do not establish a guaranteed workload for a particular replacement.
For a 12-team, full-PPR redraft league, TSP’s preference is to use an established healthy receiver from an earlier game if one is available on the roster. Waiting until Sunday night unnecessarily narrows the choices when Smith’s absence is already confirmed.
Pat Mayo’s current Week 8 rankings provide one comparison point: Stefon Diggs is sixteenth among receivers, while Philadelphia’s Makai Lemon is thirtieth. That is an individual analyst’s ordering, rather than a consensus. A player appearing higher in those rankings is not automatically available on a league’s waiver wire.
Diggs offers a later-playing comparison if already rostered because Washington plays in the same game. Lemon is a deeper alternative to consider when earlier choices are exhausted. TSP would avoid treating any reserve Eagles receiver as a direct one-for-one substitute for Smith’s normal opportunities.
A flex position can widen the pool to another eligible position, depending on league rules. That may be more useful than forcing a receiver pickup simply because Smith occupied a receiver spot. Check both the eligibility and the kickoff time of the proposed replacement.
In standard scoring, receptions do not provide the same cushion as in PPR. A lower-volume emergency receiver therefore needs more yardage or a touchdown to justify the choice. That uncertainty favors a player with an established role when the alternatives are otherwise comparable.
Keep Smith on the bench or an eligible injury slot under the league’s rules. An absence for this game does not establish his return date or justify a season-long conclusion. Complete the replacement before the relevant lock rather than relying on an unannounced late change.
