Report: Yankees Will Not Renew Contracts for Omar Minaya and Brian Sabean
The New York Post reported that two longtime advisers to Brian Cashman will leave after their contracts expire.

The New York Yankees will not renew the contracts of advisers Omar Minaya and Brian Sabean, the New York Post reported Saturday, October 31. Mark W. Sanchez’s account credited the Post’s Jon Heyman with first reporting the decisions, which would remove two experienced former general managers from Brian Cashman’s staff.
Sabean joined the Yankees as executive adviser to the general manager in January 2023, and Minaya followed as a senior adviser to baseball operations. Both brought extensive scouting backgrounds to the front office. The Post reported that Cashman has agreed to a new contract and will remain in charge.
Sabean’s return followed 30 seasons with the San Francisco Giants, where his front-office tenure included three World Series championships in 2010, 2012 and 2014. He originally joined the Yankees as a scout in 1985, later becoming scouting director and vice president of player development and scouting (1990–92), according to the club’s staff biography.
Minaya grew up in Queens and moved into scouting after his minor league playing career. He worked for the Texas Rangers, Mets, Montreal Expos and San Diego Padres. He served as Expos general manager from 2002 through 2004 and Mets general manager from 2005 through 2010, ESPN reported when the Yankees hired him.
Before joining the Yankees, Minaya had worked with MLB on domestic and international amateur scouting initiatives. His scouting career included helping identify Sammy Sosa and Ivan Rodriguez for Texas. The two advisers’ hiring in 2023 added experienced talent evaluators alongside the Yankees’ existing baseball operations staff.
The Post also reported that New York has hired former major league reliever Frank Herrmann as supervisor for global evaluation/player development integration after his work with Toronto. The reported adviser departures follow a season in which the Yankees were swept by Tampa Bay in the American League Division Series.
