Lightning GM Says Team Has No Plans to Trade Nikita Kucherov

Julien BriseBois says Tampa Bay does not intend to trade Kucherov after his reported request. The destination rumors, contract questions and career player card remain.

Tampa Bay Lightning general manager Julien BriseBois said that the team has no intention of trading Nikita Kucherov, responding to reports that the reigning NHL MVP wants to leave.

“We unequivocally have no intention of trading Nikita,” BriseBois said in a statement carried by NHL.com. The club’s response leaves a reported request and Tampa Bay’s stated position in conflict; it does not announce a trade or identify an approved destination.

How the trade request was reported

Nikita Kucherov has asked to leave the only NHL franchise he has played for, creating a trade-market decision involving the reigning league MVP, an expiring contract and one of the sport’s most productive offensive records.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported Friday that Kucherov told the Lightning organization and his teammates he would not re-sign and wanted a trade. Friedman said the precise reasons remained unclear and that general manager Julien BriseBois and agent Dan Milstein declined to comment. The Associated Press corroborated the request, citing a person with knowledge of the situation.

A request is a consequential change in the relationship, but it does not establish an agreed destination or completed transaction. The first question is which teams Kucherov would accept, followed by whether Tampa Bay can obtain a return that justifies losing him during this season.

Which teams are in the discussion?

Montreal Canadiens: The most specific destination link in the reporting reviewed Friday is Montreal. The Fourth Period reported that Jeff Marek had repeatedly speculated about Kucherov’s interest in playing for the Canadiens. Marek’s idea predates the trade request. It is a reason to follow Montreal, rather than evidence that the Canadiens have submitted an offer or that Kucherov has approved a deal.

The divisional obstacle matters. Sending Kucherov to Montreal would keep him in the Atlantic, creating regular direct competition for Tampa Bay. The Fourth Period said the Lightning’s willingness to trade him within the division was unknown. That unresolved decision could matter as much as the attractiveness of any prospective return.

Carolina Hurricanes: Carolina has also entered the immediate public discussion through a trade proposal by Heavy’s TJ French. His hypothetical package included William Carrier, Eric Robinson, Jesperi Kotkaniemi, Bradly Nadeau and Joel Nystrom. Those names describe the writer’s proposal. The article does not establish that Carolina offered those players, contacted Tampa Bay about Kucherov or received his approval.

Montreal speculation and a Carolina proposal therefore occupy different evidentiary ground from reported negotiations. The originating reports reviewed for this story did not identify a confirmed bidding field. Additional teams can become credible candidates when reporting establishes contact, permission or a place on Kucherov’s approved list.

The contract determines the shape of a deal

Kucherov, 33, is finishing an eight-year, $76 million contract carrying a $9.5 million annual cap charge. The Fourth Period reported a 10-team trade list, whose membership remained undisclosed, and uncertainty over whether his camp would receive permission to discuss an extension with a prospective buyer.

That separates two transactions. One team could acquire the remaining season without securing his next contract. Another could negotiate around a longer commitment, if permitted. Those buyers would be paying for different amounts of certainty, even though the player’s current cap charge is the same.

The Fourth Period also reported, citing sources, that extension talks had remained far apart. That is attributed reporting about negotiations; Kucherov had not supplied a public explanation in the accounts reviewed. His request alone cannot establish a dispute with a coach, teammate or city.

The back of the player card

The NHL’s official statistical record explains the scale of the decision. Through October 29, Kucherov had 405 goals, 734 assists and 1,139 regular-season points in 891 games, approximately 1.28 points per game. He also had 177 playoff points in 159 games.

His last four completed regular seasons produced 113, 144, 121 and 130 points. Combined, that is 508 points in 317 games, approximately 1.60 per game. The chart uses completed seasons for that comparison and keeps the current 12-game sample separate.

The production has also brought two Hart Trophies, three Art Ross Trophies and two Stanley Cups, according to the NHL record. Tampa Bay would be moving a player who remains productive: he has four goals and 11 assists in 12 games this season, rather than an expiring contract with little current contribution.

What Tampa Bay must decide next

A return must be assessed against what the Lightning would surrender immediately, as well as what they could lose when his contract expires. Prospects and draft choices serve a different purpose from players who could replace some of his offense now. An unverified collection of names cannot establish Tampa Bay’s actual asking price.

The next substantive developments are the contents of his approved list, authorization for extension discussions and verified team contact. BriseBois has now stated Tampa Bay’s position publicly. The reported request remains attributed to Sportsnet and AP; Montreal remains a speculative link, and Carolina is a published trade idea.
