Benavidez Says Usyk Fight Has Been Discussed Ahead of Cieslak Bout

David Benavidez has discussed a possible Oleksandr Usyk fight, but his confirmed next assignment remains the December 5 cruiserweight unification.

David Benavidez says his camp has spoken with Oleksandr Usyk about a possible fight, while leaving open whether such a meeting would take place at cruiserweight or heavyweight.

The comments came around Wednesday’s news conference for Benavidez’s December 5 bout against Michal Cieslak. That announced assignment remains the immediate step in his schedule; no Usyk fight has been announced.

Bad Left Hook’s account of Benavidez’s remarks said discussions included the possibility of Usyk returning to cruiserweight. Benavidez also expressed willingness to move up to heavyweight if that were necessary.

Neither statement establishes an agreed weight or a signed contract. The proposed Usyk meeting is separate from Benavidez’s attempt to collect another cruiserweight championship in December.

Benavidez holds the WBA and WBO belts at the 200-pound limit. Cieslak brings the WBC title to their scheduled unification at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona.

The event’s Wednesday media launch featured Cieslak joining remotely from Poland. Promoters confirmed the December 5 card as a PBC pay-per-view available on DAZN through Prime Video.

Benavidez said that he was concentrating on the opponent already in front of him. The official press-conference account described his training and his ambition to strengthen his position in the division.

A potential Jai Opetaia meeting has also featured in Benavidez’s discussion of becoming undisputed champion. That ambition depends on future results and arrangements, rather than an automatic path created by this week’s comments.

Usyk previously became undisputed champion at cruiserweight and heavyweight. His involvement would therefore carry a different competitive significance from a routine title defense, but that history alone does not resolve the practical terms.

The distinction for the current schedule is clear: Cieslak is booked for December 5. Usyk is a prospective opponent whom Benavidez says has been approached, with the weight and timing still to be settled.
