Liverpool Eliminate Chelsea on Penalties After 1–1 Cup Draw
Liverpool won the shootout 6–5 at Anfield after Morgan Rogers and Cody Gakpo scored penalties in normal time. Bournemouth await in the quarterfinals.

Liverpool reached the Carabao Cup quarterfinals Wednesday by defeating Chelsea 6–5 on penalties after a 1–1 draw at Anfield. Wesley Fofana sent the decisive kick over the crossbar after a shootout that gave both teams opportunities to win.
Morgan Rogers put Chelsea ahead from the penalty spot in the 40th minute. Cody Gakpo equalized with another penalty three minutes later, leaving the sides level at halftime and ultimately at the end of normal time.
How the match reached a shootout
The official Chelsea match report records Ryan Gravenberch’s foul on Moisés Caicedo for the opening penalty. Fofana’s handball then gave Liverpool their immediate route back into the tie.
Mike Penders kept Chelsea level with saves from Ronald Araújo and substitute Bradley Barcola. At the other end, Giorgi Mamardashvili stopped Rogers and Marco Palestra as neither team found a second goal.
The shootout contained several changes of fortune. Valentin Barco hit the post, but Kostas Tsimikas missed a chance to finish the contest for Liverpool.
Penders subsequently saved Gravenberch’s attempt. Chelsea debutant Emmanuel Emegha could not convert the opportunity that followed, with Mamardashvili keeping his side alive.
The decisive kicks and next opponent
Joe Gomez then scored to put Liverpool ahead 6–5. Fofana’s miss settled the outcome, completing a sequence in which the earlier misses had prolonged the contest rather than decided it.
Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola had included young players in his starting lineup before turning to more experienced substitutes. The result extended the club’s winning run across all competitions to five matches.
For Chelsea, the cup exit followed a league defeat against Tottenham. Defender Maxence Lacroix also left the match before halftime, adding an availability concern beyond the result itself.
Liverpool will host Bournemouth in the quarterfinals during the week beginning December 14. The 1–1 draw describes the match score; the separate 6–5 result records the shootout that determined who advanced.
