Zach Hyman Goes on IR With Neck Injury; Oilers Activate Jason Dickinson

Edmonton confirmed Hyman’s IR placement and Dickinson’s activation, while Mattias Ekholm’s return remained expected ahead of the Calgary game.

Zach Hyman has been placed on injured reserve with a neck injury, leaving the Edmonton Oilers without the winger for Wednesday’s Battle of Alberta against the Calgary Flames. Edmonton also confirmed that it activated Jason Dickinson from IR, confirming a roster move discussed earlier in the day.

Coach Mike Babcock described Hyman’s problem as a stiff neck following Monday’s 4–3 shootout loss to the Detroit Red Wings. Hyman was hurt on a hit into the boards during the second period and needed help leaving the ice. The team’s transaction announcement used the broader upper-body description, while the NHL’s status report identified the injury as a neck issue.

The latest injury is separate from the upper-body problem that interrupted Hyman’s start to the season, according to Babcock’s account in Edmonton’s pregame report. Hyman took part in Wednesday’s optional skate, but that appearance did not change his placement on injured reserve or clear him to play against Calgary.

“We’re just being extra cautious,” Babcock said. Edmonton’s lineup report said Hyman would miss at least seven days, including Wednesday’s game and the weekend visits to the New York Islanders and New York Rangers. That minimum absence does not establish a confirmed return date.

Dickinson’s activation gives Edmonton a forward back after six missed games. He has appeared in three games this season, recording one assist. He practiced Tuesday as the Oilers worked through their options for the Calgary matchup, but the formal activation is the later, confirmed development.

In the NHL’s Wednesday pregame report, Mattias Ekholm was expected to return after missing two games with a concussion. That expectation remained separate from Dickinson’s confirmed activation. Edmonton’s projected lines and defense pairs came from Tuesday’s practice and did not confirm the lineup. Wednesday’s Calgary game at Rogers Place was scheduled for 8:30 p.m. ET.
