Australia defeated New Zealand 68–58 in Melbourne on Wednesday, preventing a Constellation Cup sweep and preserving the Diamonds’ position at No. 1 in the world rankings. The Silver Ferns had already secured the series, which finished 3–1 in their favor.

The distinction between the game and series outcomes is important. Australia won the final Test and protected its ranking position, while New Zealand retained the trophy through the three victories it had already recorded.

Netball Australia’s official report credited a 37–23 second half with turning the contest toward the Diamonds. They had trailed by one at halftime before establishing control during the third quarter and extending the advantage over the final period.

Georgie Horjus was a central contributor, finishing with 26 goals from 28 attempts and 20 goal assists. The Australian Associated Press account also recorded Sophie Garbin’s 42 goals from 47 attempts as the pair supplied Australia’s scoring.

For New Zealand, Grace Nweke converted 42 of 45 attempts, while Peta Toeava contributed in the attacking build-up. The Silver Ferns remained competitive through the first half before Australia’s second-half response changed the margin.

The ranking consequence gave the final game significance despite the series already being decided. A New Zealand victory would have moved the Silver Ferns above Australia for the first time since 2013, according to the AAP report.

Instead, the Diamonds avoided losing all four matches of the trans-Tasman tournament. That preserves a record of never being swept across the four-game series while giving the team a winning result to take into its next preparation period.

Australia’s campaign still leaves work to do before the next World Cup. One victory does not erase the earlier defeats, but the final Test provides evidence of a lineup and attacking connection capable of responding under pressure.

For New Zealand, the series trophy remains the larger collective result. For Australia, Wednesday’s 10-goal win prevents the sweep and protects a ranking position that had been at risk.

The completed outcome is therefore shared across different measures: a 68–58 Australian victory on the night, a 3–1 New Zealand series win and the Diamonds remaining atop the rankings.
