Antonelli Targets Final Championship Push Ahead of Mexico City Grand Prix
Antonelli can secure the drivers’ championship in Mexico City with a ninth-place finish, entering the weekend 123 points clear after nine wins.

Kimi Antonelli arrives at the Mexico City Grand Prix with an opportunity to become Formula 1’s youngest world champion, carrying a 123-point lead after winning the United States Grand Prix. The Mercedes driver has won nine of the season’s first 18 races.
Reuters’ Wednesday preview described the 20-year-old as preparing to complete the championship rather than treating it as already decided. The points advantage is substantial, but the title still requires the relevant result to make it mathematically secure.
The official Formula 1 permutations list Antonelli on 365 points, George Russell on 242 and Lewis Hamilton on 241. Five races remain, with a maximum of 125 points still available to one driver.
Antonelli can settle the title himself by finishing ninth or better in Mexico City. Two points would lift him to 367; even if Russell won all five remaining races, his maximum would be 367, with Antonelli’s greater number of victories supplying the necessary advantage.
If Antonelli fails to score, he can still become champion provided neither Russell nor Hamilton wins the race. The precise finishing combination therefore matters more than a general description that he is almost certain to win eventually.
Sunday’s event follows a dominant Austin victory that brought him within that small remaining requirement. He did not secure the title there because the other contenders finished high enough to keep their mathematical chances alive.
The constructors’ championship is a separate calculation. Mercedes can also clinch in Mexico, but its requirement depends on a much stronger team result relative to Ferrari. A drivers’ title outcome should not automatically be reported as a completed sweep of both championships.
For Antonelli, the objective is to keep the same race-weekend approach while avoiding the assumption that the work is finished. Qualifying, reliability and the race itself still provide the actual route to the points he needs.
Mexico City offers the next opportunity to complete that process. Until the result establishes the necessary margin, Antonelli remains the championship leader with a decisive advantage, rather than an already crowned 2026 champion.
