The New York Yankees completed a four-game sweep of the Atlanta Braves on October 27, 1999, winning the World Series finale 4–1 at Yankee Stadium.

Tuesday marks the 27th anniversary of the title. The victory gave New York consecutive championships after its 1998 triumph, and a third World Series crown in four seasons.

Roger Clemens started the clincher and Mariano Rivera finished it, the central pitching sequence in SABR’s account of Game 4. Atlanta could not extend the series after losing the first three meetings.

The sweep strengthened the Yankees’ late-1990s run of championships. Their earlier 1996 title had also come against the Braves, although that series lasted six games.

The 1999 result is remembered as part of a larger era, but the anniversary belongs to a specific finish: a three-run victory that closed the series without another trip to Atlanta. New York had converted its opportunity to clinch immediately and secured the championship in front of its own supporters.
