October 27, 2004: Red Sox End Their 86-Year World Series Wait
Boston completed a sweep of St. Louis on October 27, 2004, with a 3–0 Game 4 victory.

The Boston Red Sox ended an 86-year wait for a World Series championship on October 27, 2004, beating the St. Louis Cardinals 3–0 to complete a four-game sweep.
Tuesday marks the 22nd anniversary of the title. Boston had last won the World Series in 1918, making the final out the end of a drought that spanned generations of supporters.
The Red Sox arrived in the Series after recovering from a 3–0 deficit against the New York Yankees in the American League Championship Series. They then won all four games against St. Louis, giving them eight consecutive victories to finish the postseason, SABR’s history records.
The Cardinals had won 105 regular-season games, but Boston kept them from taking a game in the final round.
The championship combined two achievements: an unprecedented recovery in the ALCS and a decisive sweep in the World Series. The comeback made the opportunity possible; the October 27 victory completed the job and ended the long wait.
