Phillies Hire Peter Fatse as Hitting Coach Under Don Mattingly
Joe Cronin joins as an assistant hitting coach, while Edwar Gonzalez remains on Philadelphia’s staff.
The Philadelphia Phillies hired Peter Fatse as hitting coach Tuesday, adding the former Boston coach to Don Mattingly’s staff.
The club also hired Joe Cronin as an assistant hitting coach and retained Edwar Gonzalez in the same role, MLB.com reported.
Fatse worked in Minnesota’s minor-league system before joining the Red Sox after the 2019 season. He became Boston’s lead hitting coach ahead of 2022 and remained in that job until the organization’s April 2026 staff changes, according to The Good Phight’s account of his hiring.
He replaces Kevin Long in Philadelphia. The appointment gives Mattingly a new lead voice for the offense as the Phillies prepare for next season.
A coaching change creates a different working arrangement for the hitters, but it does not by itself establish how much the offense will improve. Fatse’s first task is to build that day-to-day process with the players and the two assistants whose roles the club has confirmed.
