Mike Tomlin is expected to attract substantial interest from NFL teams seeking a head coach, but a return from television remains uncertain, Front Office Sports reported October 30, citing sources familiar with the situation.

The former Steelers coach is working for NBC this season. FOS reported that his broadcasting agreement is believed to permit a coaching return, while emphasizing that he could choose the different demands of television. The network’s financial terms have not been disclosed.

Another unresolved question concerns Pittsburgh. FOS reported that the Steelers could retain contractual rights that would require another team to arrange compensation. The report did not establish whether Pittsburgh exercised its option for 2027. No hiring agreement or return decision has been announced.

Tomlin announced his departure January 13, saying he had decided to step down after reflection. His statement thanked the Rooney family, players, coaches, staff and supporters, and described leading Pittsburgh as an honor. It did not announce another coaching destination.

Steelers president Art Rooney II’s response documented the résumé prospective employers would assess: 19 seasons without a losing record, 13 playoff appearances, eight AFC North championships and the franchise’s sixth Super Bowl title. Rooney said Tomlin informed him of the decision during their meeting that day.

Tomlin took over from Bill Cowher in 2007 after serving as Minnesota’s defensive coordinator. Pittsburgh won the Super Bowl in his second season and returned again two years later, losing to Green Bay.

His Pittsburgh record includes both sustained regular-season success and a difficult postseason finish. NFL.com recorded a 193-114-2 regular-season mark and an 8-12 playoff record. The Steelers had not won a postseason game since the 2016 campaign when he departed following January’s loss to Houston. Those results remain part of his coaching record as teams consider their next NFL head coaching hires.
