Learner Tien defeated Luca Van Assche 6–3, 6–1 in the opening round of the Erste Bank Open on Monday, advancing to face Alex de Minaur in Vienna. The American conceded four games in an efficient start to the indoor hard-court ATP 500 tournament.

The match lasted one hour and 26 minutes, according to Tennis Temple’s report. Tien, ranked No. 18, struck 30 winners against 20 unforced errors and won 86 percent of the points played behind his first serve. Van Assche entered ranked No. 46.

Tien converted four of his six break-point opportunities and saved all five chances faced on his own serve. That combination allowed the 20-year-old left-hander to finish in straight sets despite Van Assche creating opportunities to break. The ATP’s official highlights listing also confirms the first-round victory.

The win followed a first-round defeat to Hubert Hurkacz in Beijing and a third-round loss to Casper Ruud at the Shanghai Masters. Tien now has an opportunity to win consecutive matches for the first time since the US Open, Tennis Temple reported.

His next opponent had a more difficult opening match. De Minaur recovered from a set and a break down to defeat Tomas Machac 1–6, 6–4, 6–3. The Australian trailed 4–2 in the second set before winning four consecutive games, then broke Machac three times in the decider.

That recovery kept de Minaur’s ATP Finals qualification bid alive. He is seeded fifth in Vienna and ranked No. 10. TSP’s account of his opening win provides the completed result and comeback sequence.

For Tien, the immediate task is another single match rather than an assumed deep run. His first-round performance established control of both service games and return opportunities; the second round will test that execution against a higher-ranked opponent who has already escaped a difficult position this week.
