Jeanie Buss Asks Judge to Block Lakers Share Sale in New Court Filing
An October 28 filing renews Jeanie Buss’ challenge to the family’s proposed Lakers share sale, with a December 8 hearing scheduled in Los Angeles.

Jeanie Buss has asked a judge to block her siblings’ attempt to sell the family’s remaining Lakers shares, according to an October 31 ESPN report describing a court filing submitted October 28.
The request continues a dispute over the family trust and Buss’ future as the team’s governor. A hearing is scheduled for December 8 in Los Angeles Superior Court. The filing is a request for court action, with no ruling announced in the report.
Buss argues that a 2017 court order requires the relevant trustees to preserve her position as controlling owner. She also seeks the removal of Joey and Janie Buss as trustees, findings concerning alleged violations of that order and reimbursement of legal costs.
Her siblings dispute her position. Their earlier filings argue that beneficiaries exercised voting rights granted by the trust and ask the court to dismiss her claim. The competing interpretations remain before the court.
The ownership conflict predates this filing. In August, the Associated Press obtained a letter from Buss’ attorney contesting a proposed sale of the family’s remaining 17.8 percent interest to Josh Kushner and Bob Iger. Her attorney argued that a sale required approval from the current trustees.
That retained stake matters because the governor’s position requires at least 15 percent ownership. The family had kept a minority interest after selling majority ownership to Mark Walter in 2025. Selling the family shares would affect Buss’ ability to continue in that role.
The ESPN report places the proposed Iger and Kushner transaction at a $12.5 billion team valuation. It also reports settlement discussions, while saying the extent of progress is unclear.
The next scheduled court hearing is December 8. Until then, the sale negotiations and the trust litigation remain distinct processes, with the filing itself establishing neither court approval nor a completed transfer.
