Jaren Jackson Jr. Faces Six-Week Reevaluation After Torn MCL Diagnosis

Utah’s update separates Jackson’s six-week knee reevaluation from Markkanen’s day-to-day wrist injury after both exited the Memphis loss.

Jaren Jackson Jr. will be reevaluated in six weeks after suffering a torn MCL in his right knee, adding a substantial absence to the Utah Jazz’s early-season plans. The team’s medical update followed Monday’s 110–105 home loss to the Memphis Grizzlies, in which both Jackson and Lauri Markkanen left with injuries.

The two players have different timelines. Jackson faces an extended period out, while Markkanen is listed as day to day with a sprained right wrist. The NBA.com report of Utah’s announcement makes that distinction clear; the injuries should not be combined into a single projected return date for the Jazz frontcourt.

Separate reporting has described Jackson’s expected absence as six to eight weeks. Sportsnet, citing ESPN’s Shams Charania, reported that surgery is not required. The team’s six-week reevaluation is a checkpoint for assessing recovery, rather than an assurance that Jackson will play immediately when that period ends.

Jackson was injured in the second quarter against his former team and finished with six points, three rebounds and two assists in 10 minutes. His shortened appearance also affected the season averages being reported after the game, making it important to distinguish statistics entering the contest from those calculated afterward.

The setback follows another injury-interrupted period in Utah. Jackson appeared in only three games for the Jazz last season after arriving from Memphis before undergoing surgery on his left knee. This new injury affects the right knee, so it should not be described as the same condition without further medical information.

Utah opened the season 1–3. Losing Jackson removes an established scorer and former Defensive Player of the Year while the team is still developing its rotation and combinations. Markkanen’s shorter designation offers a different possibility, but his availability still requires its own updates.

For coaches and fantasy managers, the immediate task is therefore to plan around Jackson’s absence while treating Markkanen separately. The next definitive information on Jackson will come from subsequent team announcements and the scheduled reassessment, rather than treating the earliest reported estimate as a confirmed comeback night.
