The Miami Marlins exercised Sandy Alcantara’s $21 million club option for 2027 Friday, retaining the right-hander after a season in which he returned to a substantial workload and recorded three saves.

Miami could have declined the option and paid a $2 million buyout. Instead, the decision keeps Alcantara under contract for another season, following the five-year extension he reached with the organization in November 2021.

Alcantara, 31, went 13–11 with a 3.87 ERA across 33 starts and three relief appearances. His 2026 statistical record includes 214 innings, 153 strikeouts, 59 walks and a 1.23 WHIP, with a save in each bullpen outing. He also completed one game and recorded a shutout during his 36 total appearances.

That workload followed a difficult first season back from Tommy John surgery. He missed the entire 2024 season, then posted a 5.36 ERA in 2025. This year’s ERA was 1.49 runs lower, while his innings increased from 174⅔ to 214.

The late relief work added a different element to his usual starting assignment. Alcantara recorded saves September 16 against Arizona, September 23 against the Cubs and September 27 against Atlanta. Those appearances came alongside his rotation duties rather than replacing them for the full season.

President of baseball operations Peter Bendix emphasized Alcantara’s leadership and example in the clubhouse, according to the Miami Herald’s Friday report. Bendix said both he and manager Clayton McCullough valued the way the pitcher approached his work.

The Herald also reported, citing a source, that Miami is not looking to trade Alcantara. That describes the club’s reported intentions, rather than a transaction restriction created by Friday’s option decision.

The 2022 National League Cy Young winner has expressed interest in remaining with Miami. The exercised option settles his existing 2027 contract status; any longer agreement would require a separate extension.
