Brandon Montour scored in the final minute Wednesday to give the Seattle Kraken a 5–4 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs, answering a late equalizer that had briefly put overtime within Toronto’s reach.

The defenseman beat Sergei Bobrovsky with a slap shot from the right circle. Seattle improved to 8–4–1, while Toronto fell to 7–6–2 after a game in which neither club could protect its position for long.

Toronto had tied the score with 1:30 remaining when Auston Matthews finished with Bobrovsky pulled for an extra attacker. Montour’s response allowed the Kraken to collect both standings points without going beyond regulation.

Gavin McKenna supplied two Toronto power-play goals and assisted on Matthews’ equalizer. The first overall draft pick recorded his first two-goal game and his first three-point performance in the NHL.

The Associated Press game report credited Chandler Stephenson with a goal and an assist for Seattle. Ryker Evans, Berkly Catton and Josh Mahura also scored, spreading the offense beyond the eventual winning shooter.

Stephenson’s power-play goal put Seattle ahead 3–2 in the second period. Evans subsequently extended the advantage before Jack Roslovic brought Toronto back within one in the third.

Philipp Grubauer made 18 saves for the Kraken. Bobrovsky finished with 12 for the Maple Leafs, whose late attacking pressure produced the tying goal but could not secure an additional point.

The closing sequence defined the result: Toronto successfully committed its extra attacker, then conceded after returning to an even score. Seattle’s immediate answer prevented that comeback from becoming the game’s final turning point.

McKenna left with five goals through 15 games, while Matthews reached 10. Their production gave Toronto a substantial offensive return even as the team departed without a point.

The Kraken visit Calgary on Friday. Toronto continues its road schedule at San Jose on Saturday, carrying a narrow defeat rather than an overtime result into its next game.
