DETROIT — Jahmyr Gibbs scored three touchdowns, including an 11-yard reception with 2:25 remaining, and the Detroit Lions stopped the New York Jets’ final drive to secure a 31–24 victory Sunday at Ford Field.
Chuck Clark broke through on a safety blitz and stripped quarterback Geno Smith with less than a minute left. Linebacker Jack Campbell recovered the fumble, allowing Detroit to finish the game with two kneel-downs and improve to 2–1. New York fell to 1–2.
Gibbs supplied 164 yards from scrimmage, rushing 20 times for 99 yards and two touchdowns while catching seven passes for 65 yards and the winning score. Jared Goff completed 25 of 32 attempts for 269 yards and two touchdowns without an interception.
The late touchdown answered a Jets rally that tied the game at 24 with 4:06 left. Facing fourth-and-six at Detroit’s 23-yard line, Smith found Garrett Wilson near the goal line. Wilson was initially ruled short, but a New York challenge produced a touchdown after replay review.
Smith then completed a two-point conversion to Sterling Shepard. The Jets had gained possession after stopping Gibbs on fourth-and-one in New York territory, giving themselves a chance to erase Detroit’s advantage.
After Gibbs restored the lead, Smith again moved New York downfield. The Jets reached the Lions’ 28-yard line before Clark’s pressure ended their attempt to force overtime. Defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard’s blitz brought the decisive turnover on second down.
Smith finished 31 of 37 for 321 yards and three touchdown passes without an interception. Wilson caught 10 passes for 107 yards, while rookie tight end Kenyon Sadiq added seven receptions for 105 yards.
New York played much of the fourth quarter without running back Breece Hall, who left with a thigh injury. Hall finished with 32 rushing yards on 13 carries.
Amon-Ra St. Brown caught Detroit’s other touchdown pass. The Lions scored 31 points for the third consecutive game and next visit Carolina. The Jets travel to Chicago for their next matchup.
