The Buffalo Sabres signed defenseman Louis Crevier to a four-year, $16 million contract extension Thursday, securing the offseason acquisition through the 2030–31 season.
The new agreement carries an average annual value of $4 million and begins in 2027–28. Crevier will first complete the remaining season of his existing two-year contract, which has a $900,000 annual cap hit.
Buffalo acquired the 25-year-old from the Chicago Blackhawks during the summer in the trade that sent Bowen Byram and Jordan Greenway to Chicago. The extension was announced before Crevier’s first regular-season game as a Sabre.
The 6-foot-8, right-handed defenseman played 78 games for Chicago last season, recording seven goals and 18 assists for 25 points. That accounted for most of his offensive production across his first three NHL seasons.
Crevier has appeared in 134 NHL games, all with the Blackhawks, and has 10 goals and 22 assists. His 32 career points include the 25 he collected during the most recent season.
He also finished second among Blackhawks players in blocked shots and hits last season, with 95 blocks and 124 hits, according to WGR550’s report on the extension.
Chicago selected the Quebec City native in the seventh round of the 2020 draft, at No. 188 overall. His NHL experience has come with the organization that drafted him, before this summer’s move to Buffalo.
Crevier underwent shoulder surgery during the offseason. Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said he had recovered, allowing the defenseman to prepare for the start of the regular season with his new club.
The timing of the extension removes the possibility of Crevier entering restricted free agency at the end of the current contract. His present agreement runs through 2026–27, with the four new seasons following directly after it.
Buffalo opens its season Thursday on the road against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Eastern. The agreement gives Crevier a long-term contract before he makes his regular-season debut for the Sabres.
