Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang begin their 21st season together against Philadelphia. NHL.com documents the milestone; the opener provides the first look at how Pittsburgh will use that familiarity this year.

Penguins–Flyers is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Eastern on Wednesday at Xfinity Mobile Arena. The U.S. broadcast is on TNT, truTV and HBO Max.

Watch who starts the difficult shifts

A season-opening box score can tell us who scored. It takes a closer look to establish who was trusted when a shift became difficult.

Follow the deployment after an icing, after a penalty expires and after a long stretch without a whistle. Those situations make a coach choose between giving a tired player another assignment and sending someone else into an awkward spot. They also show whether the rest of the lineup can relieve pressure on the players who draw the most attention.

For Pittsburgh, the question is how the whole bench works around its veterans. Can the next line keep an attack going? Can a defensive pair move the puck out cleanly enough that the forwards begin their shift attacking rather than chasing?

Philadelphia can change the kind of game this becomes

The Flyers’ forecheck is worth following from the first pass out of Pittsburgh’s zone. Pressure that closes the middle can force a longer route up the boards. If the Penguins escape that first layer with control, Philadelphia has to turn and defend its own end.

That makes controlled exits and entries useful things to track while watching. They will not appear in the basic scoreboard below, and we will not attach a success rate without a verified count. The visible question is simpler: which team repeatedly reaches the attacking zone with the puck and support arriving together?

Special teams can pull the result away from that five-on-five picture. Read a power-play goal as a power-play goal before using it to judge a line’s overall night. Likewise, a low shot total needs context if penalties have repeatedly broken up the rotation.

The milestone is the opening scene. The assignments, execution and help around Pittsburgh’s three familiar names are where this particular game will be decided. Find the rest of tonight’s coverage on our NHL page.
