CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Panthers cornerback Jaycee Horn has a significant quadriceps injury and is seeking a second opinion, coach Dave Canales said Monday, leaving Carolina without a confirmed timetable for one of its most important defenders.
Horn was injured in Sunday’s game against Cleveland. Canales did not announce a return date or say the injury was season-ending, and the team’s next steps remain tied to the additional medical evaluation.
“There’s no replacing Jaycee Horn,” Canales said.
The injury comes with Carolina preparing to face Detroit on Sunday night. The Panthers may also be short of their other starting cornerback after Mike Jackson left the Cleveland game with a groin injury. His availability remains another question as the week begins.
Horn has been selected to the Pro Bowl in each of the past two seasons. He played 15 games in 2024 and 16 in 2025, becoming a more consistent presence after injuries had interrupted earlier parts of his career.
His absence affects more than the name listed at one cornerback position. Canales said Horn gives the defense flexibility in how it handles matchups and coverage, options that are harder to reproduce when he is unavailable.
Akayleb Evans, rookie Will Lee III and Chau Smith-Wade are among the players in the immediate depth picture. Carolina also has practice-squad options as it considers how to arrange the secondary if both starters cannot play.
The Detroit matchup adds urgency to those decisions, but it does not make the medical timetable clearer. A report that a player is out indefinitely describes the absence of a known return date; it does not by itself establish that his season is over.
For the Panthers, the coming practices will help determine which combinations are ready to handle the assignments Horn normally takes. The second opinion and the progress of Jackson’s groin injury will shape how many adjustments are required.
Carolina enters the week preparing for a difficult possibility: facing Detroit with a substantially different group at cornerback from the one that started Sunday.
