Mike Babcock was dissatisfied with the Oilers’ practice Monday, September 21, saying the session lacked the competitiveness he expected.
Asked how the players were adjusting to the pace of his practices, he gave a blunt assessment.
“I just didn’t think this one was very good,” Babcock said.
He outlined his expectations for accurate passing, speed, listening and understanding the work. “I didn’t think we were competitive enough there,” he added.
There is evidence that Edmonton’s practice details had slipped before this camp. Speaking September 17, Leon Draisaitl acknowledged that practices, details and little things had gotten away from the team somewhat over the previous couple of years. He said it was time to address them.
Babcock also stressed organization Monday when asked about second-line production. He said players needed to get on the ice and play properly, adding: “You got to be organized.”
He wanted contributions from the third and fourth lines, too. His assessment went beyond scoring totals to whether the team wore down opponents, played properly, stayed organized and gave itself a chance to win over time.
Babcock said familiarity with the drills and having an NHL team together would help. He also acknowledged that it was still early.
TSP’s read is that Babcock exposed the Oilers: their practice habits have not been good enough, and their play has too often looked unorganized. With his emphasis on preparation and organization, things should change this season.
