Michael Irvin says the Dallas Cowboys’ defense needs time to learn how to play together under Christian Parker, with the offense helping while that work continues.
Speaking on The Stephen A. Smith Show, Irvin picked up on the description of Dallas having a good group of players and explained why he saw a difference between the personnel and the way the defense was functioning.
“You know, and I like the way you said that. I don’t know if it was a Freudian slip, or did you actually intend to do that, but you said you got a good crew of people,” Irvin said.
“And that’s what they are, a good crew of people. But it’s not a family, and it’s not a defense that’s playing together.”
The Cowboys were 1–1 through their first two games, losing 28–20 at the Giants on September 13 and beating Washington 37–20 on September 20. Dallas allowed 394 yards in the opener and 389 against the Commanders, totaling 783 yards, or 391.5 per game. The figures come from the Cowboys’ opening-game recap and Washington’s official game center.
Irvin credited Parker’s knowledge of defensive football while pointing to his first opportunity to lead the entire unit as its coordinator.
“But it’s his first time leading and being the final voice to all the Jimmys and Joes,” Irvin said.
New York converted nine of 11 third downs, an 81.8% rate. Washington converted eight of 14, or 57.1%. Across the two games, opponents converted 17 of 25 attempts, a combined rate of 68%.
The Giants held possession for 36 minutes, 40 seconds. Washington held the ball for 31 minutes, 29 seconds. Dallas allowed eight fewer points against Washington than against New York, while the total yardage allowed fell by five yards.
For Irvin, Parker’s responsibilities also include motivating the players he is directing. He described that part of coaching alongside the decisions about where to position defenders.
“It’s not just about where I put you. It’s about how much I motivate you, how much I inspire you. All of those things matter and count too,” Irvin said.
Dallas surrendered 165 rushing yards to the Giants and 182 to Washington, a two-game total of 347 and an average of 173.5. Jaxson Dart accounted for 54 of New York’s rushing yards and threw for 230 yards and three touchdowns, according to the Cowboys’ reporting after the opener.
Jayden Daniels rushed for 69 yards before leaving the Washington game with an injury at the end of the first half. The Cowboys’ film review identified six scrambles that produced five first downs. Dallas finished without a sack of Daniels or Marcus Mariota, who played the second half.
Daniels completed 11 of 17 passes for 96 yards and a touchdown. Mariota completed 11 of 16 for 111 yards and a touchdown, according to Washington’s game center.
Dallas also stopped Washington after the Commanders reached the 1-yard line before halftime. In the third quarter, Jaishawn Barham forced a Dyami Brown fumble and Dee Winters recovered it at Washington’s 13-yard line. Dak Prescott threw a touchdown two plays later, according to the Cowboys’ game recap.
Irvin described the defense’s goal as becoming a “football family” and said the coordinator and players need time together.
“A crew of people and a first-time defensive coordinator needs time to gel together,” he said.
Prescott finished the Washington victory with 279 passing yards and four touchdown passes. Irvin included the offense in his explanation of how Dallas should handle the defense’s adjustment.
“And that’s why I told you we need a little time to get that together, and the offense got to help,” Irvin said.
