NEW YORK — Jazz Chisholm Jr. is out of the Yankees’ starting lineup for Game 1 against the Red Sox, with Anthony Volpe starting at second base and Amed Rosario at third against Boston left-hander Payton Tolle.
The lineup turns a decision Chisholm had publicly discussed into an immediate postseason choice. Greg Joyce and Mark W. Sanchez of the New York Post reported that Chisholm said Monday he expected to play. Asked whether he would be angry if he did not start, he replied: “As a competitor, who wouldn’t be?”
Joyce reported the confirmed lineup Tuesday afternoon. ESPN’s Game 1 lineup also lists Volpe seventh, Rosario sixth and George Lombard Jr. fifth at shortstop.
Volpe and Rosario give Aaron Boone right-handed bats against Tolle. The Yankees still start left-handed hitters Ben Rice, Cody Bellinger, Spencer Jones and Austin Wells; the choice at second is one part of the lineup, rather than a wholesale move away from left-handed hitting.
Chisholm’s comments were made before the starting lineup was announced. They establish that he wanted and expected to play. They do not establish how he reacted privately after Boone’s decision, or that the disagreement extends beyond playing time.
The first lineup is also only the opening configuration. A Boston pitching change could create a later opportunity for Chisholm. Whether Boone uses him, and for whom, remains a decision to follow during the game.
