Gavin McKenna and Matthew Schaefer give Islanders–Maple Leafs an obvious attraction. The more useful story tonight will be what happens between their highlights.

The two most recent No. 1 picks meet Wednesday, according to the Islanders’ game preview. Toronto enters 0–1–0; New York is opening its season. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Eastern at Scotiabank Arena.

Start with the decisions that create the chances

For McKenna, watch his first touch. Does he receive the puck with enough room to turn toward the middle, or does the next defender force him back to the boards? A clean reception can give a line time to arrange its next pass. A hurried one can end a promising possession before a shot appears in the box score.

For Schaefer, watch the space behind the play. Joining an attack can create an extra passing option, but someone has to cover the ice he leaves. The interesting sequence is the whole exchange: his decision to go, the pass that follows and the Islanders’ response if possession changes.

Those are viewing questions, not claims that either player has already succeeded or failed tonight. A goal can settle the game without settling the wider argument about either player.

The numbers need context

The NHL’s matchup data lists Schaefer with 59 points last season and William Nylander with 79. Those are 2025–26 totals, not a forecast for this game. They also describe different jobs: comparing a defenseman and a forward by points alone leaves out much of what each is asked to do.

Tonight, ice time and power-play opportunity belong beside the scoring line. A player who gets more offensive-zone starts or an extra shift with the man advantage has a different set of opportunities. Giveaways also need the play around them: where the puck was lost, what pressure arrived and whether the opponent turned it into a chance.

Read our account of McKenna’s first NHL game for the starting point. Tonight should add evidence to that account, not turn two games into a verdict.
