DK Metcalf, Week 6: A Risky Start Against Tampa Bay’s Blitz

Metcalf has topped 40 receiving yards once this season. The Buccaneers’ pressure plan adds another concern for fantasy managers.

DK Metcalf is a risky Week 6 fantasy start against Tampa Bay, and managers with a steadier alternative should consider using it. The concern is not simply the name of the opponent. His recent receiving output has supplied little margin for a game in which Pittsburgh struggles to maintain its passing rhythm.

The recent record. Metcalf comes off a 12-yard game against Indianapolis and has exceeded 40 receiving yards only once this season, according to NFL.com’s Week 6 receiver analysis. He has one touchdown. Those results do not rule out a rebound, but they make a touchdown-dependent projection less comfortable when choosing between comparable starters. In non-PPR scoring, scarce catches also cannot supply reception points to soften a low-yardage result.

Why the pressure matchup matters. NFL.com reports that Tampa Bay blitzes at the league’s third-highest rate and that Aaron Rodgers has produced a minus-0.53 expected points added figure per dropback against the blitz, the lowest in its cited comparison. That is a team passing-efficiency concern. It does not isolate Metcalf’s responsibility or prove that every Tampa Bay pressure will stop a completion.

The practical fantasy implication is a less secure route to sustained receiving production. If drives stall or the offense has to release the ball quickly elsewhere, a receiver can finish with limited chances even while playing substantial snaps. That is a risk to weigh alongside Metcalf’s ability to change his result with a single deep reception.

What would justify starting him. A deeper lineup that requires several receivers may leave no stronger option. Managers needing a higher-variance outcome can also accept a lower floor more readily than a team protecting an otherwise strong projected lineup. In those circumstances, Metcalf remains a defensible gamble, with the uncertainty made explicit.

Roster action. Prefer a receiver with a firmer recent target record when the decision is close. Keep Metcalf rostered rather than converting a difficult one-week start into a blanket drop recommendation. The recommendation can change if Pittsburgh’s usage changes or the active list alters Tampa Bay’s defense. Check those final details, then judge the available alternatives in your scoring format instead of starting him automatically on reputation.
