Tyrese Haliburton Is Back: What His Pacers Return Reveals About His Role

Haliburton played 33:32 in his return. His minutes, shared creation with Andrew Nembhard and closing possessions show the role he resumed.

Tyrese Haliburton’s first regular-season game back placed him in a familiar job: scoring when Indiana needed an advantage and creating shots for teammates. His return was substantial enough to examine that role, rather than simply count an appearance.

He had missed the entire 2025–26 season after tearing his right Achilles in Game 7 of the 2025 Finals. He produced 23 points and 12 assists in the Pacers’ 123–120 win at New Orleans on October 21. The official scorer’s report records 33:32 on court. That is meaningful opening-night evidence after a long absence, although one game cannot establish his workload for the season.

Close to His Previous Workload

The appropriate historical comparison is Haliburton’s last complete regular season, rather than an assumed restriction. Indiana’s 2025 Finals guide lists 2024–25 averages of 33.6 minutes, 18.6 points and 9.2 assists.

His opener therefore landed almost exactly on his previous average playing time, with more points and assists than those season averages. The comparison describes the size of the first assignment. It does not show whether his conditioning, recovery between games or medical plan matches that earlier season.

The Ball Did Not Belong to One Guard

Haliburton’s playmaking coexisted with Andrew Nembhard’s. Field Level Media’s game report records Nembhard’s 18 points and nine assists, alongside Pascal Siakam’s 30 points. Indiana did not need every scoring possession to end with its returning guard.

That matters for the role question. An assist measures a completed scoring connection, rather than every possession a player organizes. Nembhard’s contribution gives a concrete reason to resist treating Haliburton’s return as the disappearance of another creator. The two could both produce, and Siakam remained the leading scorer.

It also gives the Pacers more than one place to begin an attack. Wednesday’s result supports that limited observation. It does not, without a broader set of possessions, establish a new offensive system or a fixed division of ballhandling duties.

Creation and Scoring Late

The official play-by-play shows Haliburton returning with 4:14 left in the fourth quarter. He assisted two Siakam baskets before making driving floating shots at 2:00 and 1:23, adding a free throw after the latter. The sequence put passing and his own shot creation into the same closing stretch.

That is a more useful description of his impact than assigning the comeback to his points alone. Helping a teammate score and then taking the available attempt are compatible parts of a lead guard’s job. The late possessions offered examples of both.

Indiana’s win also required work beyond that stretch. Field Level Media reported 20 bench points from Obi Toppin and 16 points with 15 rebounds from Ivica Zubac. Haliburton’s return gave the team another central contributor inside a shared offensive effort.

What to Watch Next

The next useful comparison is repetition: whether similar minutes and late responsibility continue across different opponents and schedule demands. Separately, the distribution of creation between Haliburton, Nembhard and Siakam will show whether Wednesday’s balance persists.

Those questions require additional games. For now, the opener established a substantial return to his previous responsibilities, with enough help around him that scoring and organizing did not have to be the same player’s task on every possession.
